Post-lingual Deafness
Also known as: Post-linguistic Deafness, Acquired Deafness, Late-Onset Deafness
Deafness that occurs after a person has acquired spoken language, meaning they have existing literacy in written and spoken language. Post-lingual deaf users can typically read and write fluently, making text-based accessibility features like captions and transcripts highly effective for this population. However, they still benefit from visual notifications instead of audio alerts, adjustable timing for media content, and clear visual feedback for interactive elements. The growing prevalence of post-lingual deafness is linked to aging populations and increasing noise exposure, making accessible web design for this group increasingly important.
