Adaptive User Interface

Also known as: AUI, Adaptive Interface, Self-Adapting Interface

A user interface that automatically detects changes in user behavior or ability and adjusts its presentation or functionality accordingly, without requiring the user to manually configure settings. In accessibility, adaptive user interfaces can monitor pointing performance (e.g., detecting increased misclicks or cursor drift) and respond by enlarging click targets, adjusting mouse sensitivity, or providing alternative interaction methods. Unlike static accessibility settings, AUIs can respond to intermittent or progressive changes in ability caused by fatigue, aging, medical conditions, or temporary injury. Key design challenges include balancing helpfulness with user autonomy, ensuring notifications about detected problems do not feel judgmental, maintaining user privacy, and building trust that the system will respond accurately and appropriately.
