Step-Free Access
Also known as: Level Access, Barrier-Free Access
A route or entrance to a building, transport station, or public space that does not require the use of steps or stairs, enabling access for wheelchair users, people with mobility impairments, parents with pushchairs, and travellers with heavy luggage. In transport contexts, step-free access considers both the route within a station and the gap and step height between the platform and vehicle — for example, platform-to-train gaps exceeding 181mm typically require wheelchair users to have assistance. Step-free access information is a key component of accessible travel planning.
