On-Screen Keyboard

Also known as: Virtual Keyboard, Software Keyboard, OSK

A software application that displays a visual representation of a keyboard on the computer screen, allowing users to type by selecting keys with a pointing device, head tracker, eye gaze system, or switch. On-screen keyboards are essential assistive technology for people who cannot use a physical keyboard due to motor impairments. They often include features such as word prediction, adjustable key sizes, dwell selection (activating a key by hovering over it), and scanning mode (keys are highlighted sequentially and selected with a single switch). The effectiveness of an on-screen keyboard depends heavily on the speed and accuracy of the user's pointing method.
