User-Generated Content
Also known as: UGC, Prosumer Content
Web content created and published by non-technical users through platforms like blogs, social media, wikis, and content management systems, rather than by professional web developers. The rise of user-generated content in Web 2.0 has created a significant accessibility challenge: millions of content creators publish material without awareness of accessibility barriers they may be introducing, such as images without alt text, links without descriptive text, or headings used only for visual styling rather than document structure. Traditional accessibility tools communicate errors in technical jargon that these non-technical authors cannot understand, highlighting the need for authoring tools that guide content creators toward accessible practices using plain language and empathic design.
