Voice Interface

Also known as: Speech Interface, Voice User Interface, VUI, Conversational Interface

An interface that allows users to interact with a system using spoken natural language commands rather than keyboard, mouse, or touch input. Voice interfaces range from simple command-and-control systems that recognise fixed phrases to conversational assistants that interpret open-ended natural language requests. For people with visual impairments, voice interfaces have the potential to address major screen reader limitations — including browsing fatigue from excessive keyboard shortcuts, cognitive load from memorising commands, and information overload from sequential content narration. Research with blind users shows strong preference for voice-driven web browsing, with usability scores nearly doubling compared to keyboard-based screen readers, though privacy concerns in shared environments remain a limitation.
