Adaptive Interface
Also known as: Adaptive User Interface, Self-Adapting Interface
A user interface that automatically modifies its presentation, behaviour, or content based on detected user characteristics, capabilities, preferences, or environmental conditions. In accessibility, adaptive interfaces can respond to changes in a user's sensory, motor, or cognitive capabilities — for example, increasing text size when reduced visual acuity is detected, or simplifying navigation when mouse control becomes less precise. Adaptive interfaces are particularly relevant for older web users whose capabilities may fluctuate gradually over time, as they can provide accommodations without requiring users to self-identify as having a disability or manually configure accessibility settings. Key design challenges include balancing automation with user control, maintaining trust, protecting privacy of capability data, and avoiding stigmatisation.
