Readability

Also known as: Text Readability

The ease with which written text can be read and understood, determined by factors including vocabulary complexity, sentence length, grammatical structure, and text organisation. Readability is distinct from legibility (which concerns the visual clarity of individual characters and words). For web accessibility, readability is important for users with dyslexia, cognitive disabilities, and limited literacy, as well as for non-native speakers. WCAG 2.0 Success Criterion 3.1.5 (Reading Level) recommends providing supplementary content or simplified versions when text requires reading ability beyond lower secondary education level. Practical readability improvements include using short sentences, common words, active voice, clear headings, and avoiding jargon and double negatives.
