Text Simplification

Also known as: Automatic Text Simplification, Content Simplification

The process of transforming complex written text into simpler, more understandable versions while preserving the essential meaning. Text simplification can be performed manually by content authors following plain language guidelines, or automatically using natural language processing (NLP) techniques. Automatic approaches include syntactic simplification (breaking complex sentences into shorter, simpler structures), lexical simplification (replacing difficult words with common synonyms), automatic summarisation (condensing text to key points), and lexical elaboration (adding definitions for unfamiliar terms). Text simplification tools can serve as assistive technology for people with low literacy, cognitive disabilities, learning disabilities like dyslexia, and non-native speakers — adapting existing web content that was not authored with accessibility in mind.
