Application Profile

Also known as: Metadata Application Profile

A customization of an existing metadata standard that selects, constrains, or extends elements to meet the requirements of a particular community or application. In accessibility, application profiles are used to add accessibility-specific properties to general-purpose metadata standards like IEEE Learning Object Metadata (LOM) or Dublin Core. This allows organizations to formally describe the accessibility characteristics of their content using standardized vocabularies, enabling interoperability between systems while addressing domain-specific needs that the base standard does not cover.
