Mobile Web Initiative
Also known as: MWI, W3C Mobile Web Initiative
The W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) was a program launched in 2005 to improve the experience of accessing the web from mobile devices such as cell phones and handheld systems. Operating in a manner similar to the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI), the MWI developed best practice guidelines for mobile web authoring, influenced W3C specifications, and conducted outreach to the developer community. The initiative recognized significant overlap between mobile access challenges and disability access challenges — both involve delivering content to constrained environments where standard visual layouts may not work. This synergy meant that standards work driven by mobile needs, such as semantic markup and content adaptation, often benefited accessibility as well.
