Pluggable User Interface

Also known as: Pluggable UI, Alternative User Interface

A pluggable user interface is an interchangeable interface component that can be swapped in or out of an application without changing the application's core functionality. In the Universal Remote Console (URC) framework, pluggable user interfaces connect to an abstract "user interface socket" that exposes the application's controllable elements, allowing different interfaces to be designed for different user groups, devices, or contexts. This approach is significant for accessibility because it enables the creation of specialized interfaces — such as high-contrast visual interfaces for low vision users, simplified interfaces for cognitive accessibility, or switch-scanning interfaces for motor disabilities — without requiring the application developer to anticipate every possible user need. Pluggable interfaces can be designed by the original developer, third-party accessibility specialists, or generated automatically by systems like GenURC.
