Caret Browsing

Also known as: Caret Navigation, Caret Browse Mode

A browser navigation mode that places a movable text cursor (caret) directly in web page content, allowing users to navigate and select text using standard keyboard commands as if the page were a document in a text editor. Typically activated by pressing F7 in Firefox and Chromium-based browsers, caret browsing enables character-by-character, word-by-word, and line-by-line movement through page content. This mode is particularly important for screen reader users, who rely on caret position events to know where they are in a document, and for people with motor disabilities who need precise text selection via keyboard.
