Cypriot Sign Language
Also known as: CSL
The sign language used by the Deaf community in Cyprus, distinct from other sign languages such as American Sign Language (ASL), British Sign Language (BSL), or Greek Sign Language. Like all natural sign languages, Cypriot Sign Language has its own grammar, vocabulary, and linguistic structure that evolved independently within the Cypriot Deaf community. The existence of distinct national and regional sign languages — with over 300 recognized worldwide according to the UN — is an important consideration in digital accessibility, as tools and platforms designed for one sign language (such as ASL) may not serve users of other sign languages. This linguistic diversity means that accessible media solutions must account for the specific sign language of their target audience rather than assuming a universal sign language exists.
