Multilingualism

The use of or support for multiple languages within a system, platform, community, or society. In the context of digital accessibility, multilingualism refers to the design and development of websites and applications that can present content and interfaces in multiple languages, allowing users to access information in their preferred or native language. This is a significant accessibility concern because language barriers can exclude people from essential services and information just as effectively as physical or sensory barriers. Countries with many official languages — such as South Africa with 11 — face particular challenges in ensuring that accessible digital content reaches all linguistic communities. Effective multilingual accessibility requires internationalization of the underlying technology, localization of content and interfaces, and mechanisms for community-driven translation.
