Semiotic Inspection Method

Also known as: SIM, MIS

An evaluation method from Semiotic Engineering theory that systematically assesses the communicability of an interactive system by examining how well the designer's intended message is conveyed through the interface. The evaluator analyzes three types of interface signs separately — metalinguistic (help text, instructions, tooltips), static (buttons, labels, layout elements representing state), and dynamic (signs perceived through interaction over time) — reconstructs the metamessage from each, contrasts them for consistency, and produces an overall communicability appraisal. SIM has been adapted for various contexts including accessibility evaluation for deaf users and screen reader mediated interaction (SIM-SR).
