Signing Avatar
Also known as: Sign Language Avatar, Virtual Signer
A computer-generated animated character that produces sign language output, translating text or spoken content into visual sign language for deaf and hard of hearing users. Signing avatars are used in applications such as public digital terminals, websites, and educational software to provide sign language accessibility without requiring pre-recorded video of human interpreters. While avatars offer scalability and can be updated dynamically, the quality and naturalness of avatar-generated signing remains an active area of research and debate within the deaf community.
