Marrakesh Treaty

Also known as: Marrakesh VIP Treaty, WIPO Marrakesh Treaty

An international treaty adopted by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2013 that requires signatory countries to create copyright exceptions allowing the production and distribution of published works in accessible formats for people with print disabilities. The treaty defines beneficiaries as people who are blind, have visual or reading disabilities (including dyslexia) that prevent equivalent access to printed content, or have physical impairments that make holding a book difficult or impossible. The Marrakesh Treaty also enables cross-border exchange of accessible format copies between countries, addressing the global "book famine" where only a small percentage of published works are available in formats accessible to people with print disabilities.
