Synchronous Communication

Also known as: Real-Time Communication, Live Communication

Communication that occurs in real time, requiring all participants to be present simultaneously. In digital contexts, this includes video conferencing, live chat, instant messaging, and real-time collaboration tools. While synchronous communication fosters immediacy and social presence, it poses accessibility challenges: live captions must be provided for deaf or hard of hearing participants, screen reader users need compatible interfaces, and people with cognitive disabilities may struggle with the pace of real-time exchanges. Accessible synchronous tools should support multiple input methods, provide real-time captioning, and allow participants to adjust the speed of interaction.
