Hydrocephalus
Also known as: Hydrocephaly, Water on the Brain
A condition characterized by an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within the ventricles of the brain, causing increased intracranial pressure and enlargement of the head. Hydrocephalus can be congenital or acquired, and if untreated can lead to developmental delays, motor impairments, and cognitive difficulties. In children, it frequently co-occurs with other conditions such as spina bifida and cerebral palsy. Treatment typically involves surgical placement of a shunt to drain excess fluid. Children with hydrocephalus may benefit from early intervention with assistive technology to support communication and environmental control.
