Luminance Contrast

The difference in perceived brightness between two adjacent surfaces or objects, as opposed to color contrast which involves differences in hue. Luminance contrast is particularly important for people with low vision, as many have difficulty distinguishing colors but can detect differences in brightness. In built environments, luminance contrast between stair treads and risers, between step edges and surrounding surfaces, and on curb markings helps people with low vision detect surface level changes. Design guidelines typically recommend a minimum luminance contrast ratio for safety-critical features like stair nosings.
