Cone Dystrophy

Also known as: Cone-Rod Dystrophy

A group of inherited eye disorders that affect the cone cells in the retina, which are responsible for color vision, central vision, and visual acuity in well-lit conditions. People with cone dystrophy typically experience progressive loss of color vision, decreased visual acuity, and increased sensitivity to light (photophobia). Unlike conditions that primarily affect rod cells, cone dystrophy tends to make bright environments more challenging while relatively preserving vision in dim lighting. The condition can significantly impact reading, driving, and recognizing faces.
