Spatial Mapping
Also known as: Environment Mapping, 3D Environment Scanning
A technology used in mixed reality and augmented reality headsets that scans and creates a digital representation of the physical environment in real time. Spatial mapping identifies surfaces such as floors, walls, tables, and ceilings, enabling virtual objects (holograms) to be placed contextually within the real world — for example, on an actual table or floor. For accessibility, spatial mapping is significant because it allows assistive mixed reality applications to integrate with the user's actual living environment, enabling realistic practice of daily tasks and spatial navigation training for people with cognitive or physical disabilities.
