Accessible Transportation

Also known as: Inclusive Transportation, Transportation Accessibility

Transportation systems, vehicles, infrastructure, and services designed to be usable by people with disabilities, including those with mobility, vision, hearing, and cognitive impairments. Accessible transportation encompasses physical features (wheelchair ramps, tactile paving, audible signals), information systems (real-time audio announcements, accessible apps for route planning), and emerging technologies (autonomous vehicles, ridesharing platforms with accessibility features). Lack of accessible transportation is one of the most significant barriers to independence, employment, and social participation for people with disabilities. Research shows that people with vision impairments may spend substantial amounts on transportation and that the inability to drive profoundly affects independence, employment opportunities, and quality of life.
