Exercise Accessibility
Also known as: Fitness Accessibility, Accessible Physical Activity
The design of exercise environments, equipment, programs, and technologies to be usable by people with disabilities. Exercise accessibility encompasses both physical spaces (accessible gyms, adapted tracks, swimming pools with lifts) and the technologies and guidance systems that enable independent participation. People who are blind or have low vision face significant barriers to exercise in public spaces — jogging tracks rely on visual lane markings, gym equipment has inaccessible digital displays, and outdoor activities often require sighted guides who are difficult to recruit. Research shows that people who are blind are more likely to be obese than sighted peers, making exercise accessibility a health equity issue. Emerging solutions include navigation feedback systems using audio and haptic cues, accessible fitness apps with voice guidance, and adaptive sports equipment.
