Schizophrenia

Also known as: Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders

A chronic psychiatric condition characterized by disturbances in thought, perception, emotion, and behavior, including symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking, reduced emotional expression, and cognitive difficulties with memory, attention, and executive function. Schizophrenia affects approximately 1% of the global population and typically emerges in early adulthood. For digital accessibility, schizophrenia is relevant because the cognitive symptoms — particularly difficulties with attention, working memory, and information processing — create barriers to using technology that are distinct from sensory or motor impairments. People with schizophrenia may benefit from simplified interfaces, reduced cognitive load, structured information presentation, and technology-supported therapeutic interventions including music therapy and serious games designed to improve social and cognitive skills.
