Self-Monitoring
Also known as: Self-Recording, Self-Observation
Self-monitoring is the practice of systematically observing and recording one's own behavior, emotions, or activities, typically as part of a broader self-management or behavioral intervention program. In accessibility and disability contexts, self-monitoring tools — increasingly delivered through mobile apps and wearable devices — help individuals with autism, ADHD, and other conditions track target behaviors, emotional states, and environmental triggers in real time. This data collection supports self-reflection, helps caregivers and therapists understand behavioral patterns they might not otherwise observe, and provides a foundation for collaborative review and behavioral adjustment. Self-monitoring is considered an evidence-based practice for promoting independence and self-awareness.
