Environmental Control System
Also known as: ECS, Electronic Aids to Daily Living, EADL, Environmental Control Unit
An environmental control system (ECS) is an assistive technology that enables people with physical disabilities to independently control devices and features in their environment, such as lights, doors, televisions, phones, and computers. ECS devices accept input through various methods — including switches, voice commands, eye gaze, sip-and-puff, and motion sensors — and translate these into commands to operate household electronics and smart home devices. For individuals with severe motor impairments such as spinal muscular atrophy or high-level spinal cord injuries, environmental control systems are essential for basic independence, allowing them to perform everyday tasks that would otherwise require constant human assistance.
