Multi-Sensory Environment

Also known as: MSE, Snoezelen, Multisensory Room

A specially designed space that combines sensory stimuli — such as lighting, sound, textures, and aromas — to provide therapeutic, calming, or stimulating experiences for people with disabilities. Originally developed in the Netherlands under the name Snoezelen, multi-sensory environments are used in therapy for people with autism, intellectual disabilities, dementia, and other conditions. They support body awareness, sensory integration, and communication by allowing individuals to explore and interact with controlled sensory input at their own pace. Technology-augmented MSEs increasingly incorporate interactive elements where users can control visual or auditory output through their actions.
