Repetitive Strain Injury
Also known as: RSI, Repetitive motion injury, Overuse injury
A category of injuries affecting muscles, tendons, and nerves caused by repetitive movements, sustained awkward postures, or overuse of a body part. In the context of accessibility, repetitive strain injuries are a significant concern for manual wheelchair users, who experience high rates of shoulder pain (42-66%), rotator cuff tears, and bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome from the cyclical motion of handrim propulsion. RSI is also relevant to computer accessibility, where prolonged keyboard and mouse use can cause similar injuries, driving the need for alternative input methods and ergonomic accommodations.
