Multiple Disabilities

Also known as: Multi-impairment, Multiple Impairments, Combined Disabilities, Complex Disabilities

The presence of two or more disabilities in the same individual, such as combined motor and visual impairments, or deafblindness. People with multiple disabilities often face compounded accessibility barriers because assistive technologies and accessibility features are typically designed for single disability types. For example, a person who is both blind and has limited motor function may not be able to use standard screen reader navigation that assumes full hand mobility, or switch access systems that assume the user can see visual feedback. Designing for multiple disabilities requires flexible, multimodal approaches that do not assume any single sensory or motor channel is fully available.
