Object Permanence
The cognitive understanding that objects continue to exist even when they cannot be directly perceived through sight, sound, or touch. This developmental milestone, typically achieved in infancy for sighted children, can develop differently in blind children who lack visual confirmation of object locations. Delayed object permanence development in blind children may contribute to reduced self-initiated reaching and exploration of the environment. Understanding object permanence is relevant to accessibility because it informs the design of audio-based systems and assistive technologies that help blind individuals develop spatial awareness and confidence in interacting with their surroundings.
