Virtual Reality
Also known as: VR, Immersive Virtual Environment
A computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional environment that users can interact with using specialized hardware such as headsets, motion controllers, or body tracking sensors. In accessibility contexts, virtual reality offers potential benefits for training and therapy, including the ability to simulate real-world scenarios in safe, controlled environments with consistent stimuli presentation. VR has been used for pedestrian safety training for individuals with ASD, hand-eye coordination rehabilitation, and exposure therapy. However, VR also presents accessibility challenges including motion sickness, sensory overload for users with autism, and incompatibility with some assistive technologies.
