Maker Culture

Also known as: Maker Movement, DIY Culture

A technology-influenced extension of DIY culture that emphasizes learning through hands-on making, often using digital fabrication tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, and microcontrollers alongside traditional crafts. Makerspaces provide shared access to tools and community. For accessibility, maker culture offers opportunities for custom assistive technology creation and adaptation, but makerspaces themselves often present accessibility barriers including physical inaccessibility, sensory overload, and social exclusion. Research increasingly examines how to make maker culture more inclusive while leveraging its potential for personalized accessibility solutions.
