Communitas

A sense of community, solidarity, and mutual support that emerges among people sharing a liminal or transitional experience. Coined by anthropologist Victor Turner, communitas describes the bonds formed when individuals navigate uncertain life transitions together. In accessibility contexts, communitas explains why peer support from other people with disabilities or older adults is often more effective for technology adoption than formal training—shared lived experience creates connection and understanding that facilitates learning and identity formation during challenging transitions.
