Technophobia

Also known as: Technology Anxiety, Computer Anxiety

An irrational fear or anxiety about using technology, often manifesting as avoidance of computers, smartphones, or websites. Technophobia can stem from negative past experiences, fear of making mistakes, concerns about privacy and security, or feeling overwhelmed by rapidly changing interfaces. Research shows technophobia is a significant barrier to web accessibility for older adults, distinct from actual skill deficits. Design strategies to address technophobia include clear error recovery, reassuring feedback, consistent interfaces, and avoiding jargon that makes users feel incompetent.
