Macroglossia
Also known as: Enlarged Tongue
A condition characterized by an abnormally large tongue relative to the oral cavity, commonly associated with Down syndrome and certain other genetic conditions. Macroglossia affects speech production by altering articulation, particularly for sounds requiring precise tongue placement. Combined with weakened muscle tone (hypotonia), it contributes to the distinctive speech patterns in individuals with Down syndrome, including challenges with consonant clusters, fricatives, and overall speech intelligibility. For accessibility practitioners, understanding macroglossia helps explain why speech recognition systems trained on neurotypical speech often fail for users with Down syndrome, and why alternative or multimodal interaction methods may be necessary.
