Muscular Dystrophy

Also known as: MD

A group of genetic diseases characterized by progressive weakness and degeneration of the skeletal muscles. There are more than 30 types, including Duchenne, Becker, limb-girdle, and myotonic muscular dystrophy, each with different patterns of muscle involvement and progression. For accessibility, muscular dystrophy presents evolving requirements as the condition progresses—users may transition from standard input devices to adapted keyboards, then to switch access or eye tracking as motor function declines. Interfaces should be designed for minimal physical effort and should anticipate users whose abilities may change over time.
