Teacher of Blind Students

Also known as: TBS, Teacher of the Visually Impaired, TVI, Vision Teacher

A specially licensed educator trained to teach students who are blind or have low vision. TBSs provide instruction in the expanded core curriculum, which includes Braille literacy, orientation and mobility concepts, assistive technology skills, and self-advocacy. Research indicates that many TBSs lack confidence in their knowledge of nonvisual access technology such as screen readers and refreshable Braille displays, which can limit their ability to support students' technology literacy development. This gap often forces BLV students to develop AT skills outside of school through self-teaching or blind community mentorship.
