Numeracy
Also known as: Mathematical Literacy, Quantitative Literacy
The ability to understand, use, and reason with numbers and mathematical concepts in everyday contexts. Numeracy skills include counting, arithmetic operations, understanding percentages and proportions, interpreting number lines, and making sense of numerical information in graphs and tables. Low numeracy affects roughly one-third of adults and creates significant barriers to understanding health information, financial documents, and data visualizations. For accessibility, numeracy barriers can be addressed through concrete examples, avoiding implicit number ranges, using visual representations, and providing calculation support.
