Privacy-Enhancing Technologies
Also known as: PETs
Tools and techniques that protect user privacy by limiting the collection, use, and dissemination of personal information online. Examples include VPNs, ad blockers, privacy-focused browsers like Brave, encrypted messaging apps, and Do Not Track settings. For users with disabilities, PETs can present accessibility challenges—their interfaces must be compatible with assistive technologies, and privacy protections should not interfere with accessibility accommodations. The intersection of privacy and accessibility requires that PETs themselves be designed with accessibility in mind.
