Digital Phenotyping

Also known as: Active Digital Phenotyping, Passive Digital Phenotyping, Behavioral Phenotyping

The use of data from digital devices (smartphones, computers, wearables) to quantify behavioral and physiological characteristics relevant to health or ability. Passive digital phenotyping collects data unobtrusively during natural device use (e.g., analyzing typing patterns or phone sensor data), while active digital phenotyping requires participants to complete specific tasks (e.g., pointing tests, drawing spirals). For accessibility, digital phenotyping enables remote, longitudinal assessment of motor and cognitive abilities without clinic visits—valuable for adapting interfaces to individual capabilities or monitoring progressive conditions. Key challenges include ensuring data quality in unsupervised settings and translating behavioral measures into clinically meaningful assessments.
