Space compaction

Also known as: Horizontal compaction, White space reduction

An accessibility technique used in screen magnification software and browser extensions that reduces excessive white space and adjusts column widths to minimize horizontal scrolling. For low-vision users who rely on high magnification levels (often 3x-16x), horizontal scrolling to view wide layouts creates significant cognitive load and makes comparison tasks difficult. Space compaction intelligently condenses layouts by removing unnecessary padding, narrowing columns to fit content, and restructuring tabular data to reduce the horizontal extent users must traverse. This technique is particularly valuable for data-heavy pages like product listings, search results, and comparison tables.
