Flow

Also known as: Flow state, Optimal experience, Being in the zone

A psychological state of complete absorption in an activity, characterized by focused concentration, loss of self-consciousness, altered sense of time, and intrinsic enjoyment. Coined by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, flow occurs when a person's skills are well-matched to the challenge at hand—neither too easy (causing boredom) nor too difficult (causing anxiety). In accessibility contexts, flow is significant because well-designed assistive technologies and accessible experiences can enable people with disabilities to achieve this state of engaged, empowering activity. Accessible digital musical instruments, adaptive sports equipment, and intuitive interfaces are specifically designed to facilitate flow by matching interaction demands to individual capabilities, promoting autonomy and creative engagement rather than frustration.
