Split Attention
Also known as: Split-Attention Effect, Divided Attention
A cognitive phenomenon in multimedia learning where users must divide their visual attention between multiple information sources presented simultaneously. In accessibility contexts, this is particularly challenging for Deaf and Hard of Hearing viewers of captioned videos, who must split attention between reading captions, watching the speaker, and viewing any visual aids like slides or demonstrations. Research shows this cognitive load can lead to missed information and reduced comprehension, especially when caption pace is controlled by the video rather than the reader.
