Social Skills

Also known as: Social Competence, Interpersonal Skills

The abilities required for effective social interaction, including communication, cooperation, turn-taking, perspective-taking, reading social cues, and responding appropriately in social contexts. Social skill development is a key intervention target for individuals with autism spectrum disorder, social anxiety, and other conditions affecting social participation. Research shows that social skills do not develop in isolation—they interact with other domains like motor skills, as many social activities (playing games, collaborative tasks, sports) require both social and motor competence. Technology-based interventions increasingly target social skills through collaborative virtual environments, video modeling, and interactive games.
