Age-Related Vision Loss
Also known as: Age-Related Visual Impairment
Vision impairment that occurs as a consequence of aging, representing the most common cause of blindness and low vision worldwide. Conditions include age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts. The prevalence of significant visual impairment is expected to double between 2010 and 2030 due to population aging. For accessibility practitioners, this demographic is critical because older adults acquiring vision loss must adapt to new assistive technologies while potentially experiencing age-related cognitive changes, yet navigation and access technology is rarely studied with this population.
