Haptic Exploration

Also known as: Tactile Exploration, Touch Exploration

The process of acquiring spatial and object information through systematic touch and hand movements. Haptic exploration involves active manipulation and movement across surfaces to perceive shape, size, texture, temperature, and spatial relationships. For people who are blind or have low vision, haptic exploration is a primary method for understanding physical environments, maps, diagrams, and 3D models. Effective haptic exploration requires objects designed with appropriate scale, texture differentiation, and sufficient spacing between elements to be distinguished by fingertip touch. Research shows that haptic exploration strategies can be trained and improved, and that blind individuals often demonstrate heightened tactile sensitivity compared to sighted individuals.
