Late Blind

Also known as: Adventitiously Blind, Acquired Blindness

A person who lost their vision later in life, typically after age 5-7 when visual memories and concepts have been established. Late blind individuals often retain visual memories and may use these to construct mental representations of spaces and routes. Research suggests late blind people frequently have spatial abilities similar to sighted people and may prefer route descriptions over survey descriptions when learning new environments. Their approach to orientation and mobility may differ from those who are early/congenitally blind, as they can draw on remembered visual experiences.
