Itinerant Teacher

Also known as: Traveling Teacher, Itinerant TVI

A special education teacher who travels between multiple schools to provide services to students with disabilities, rather than being based at a single location. In the context of visual impairment services, itinerant TVIs (Teachers of students with Visual Impairments) typically serve students who are mainstreamed in general education classrooms across a district. They may be responsible for 15-20 students across many schools and grade levels, resulting in limited time with each student and professional isolation from colleagues. This service delivery model arose from the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (1975), which promoted educating students with disabilities in their neighborhood schools.
